iPad keeps returning to home screen

Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. I was planning on going in to the apple store tomorrow... Mine just restarts randomly and occasionally goes really bright or dark right before or after.. I think it's an iOS problem but i suppose it could be my device...

Most of the time a simple reboot can fix a problem, sure! Sometimes a bit more digging can be done. If it’s a memory issue though, apps force close iirc.
